The microbiome-gut-brain axis: implications for health and disease

The 6 million year journey of human evolution was not taken in solitude, but rather in close company with countless legions of microbial allies and enemies: the microbiota. Mounting evidence suggests that the trillions of microbes residing within us impact to some degree on every organ system in our bodies. Perhaps the most intriguing is the brain, and the compelling results of research in the microbiome-gut-brain axis. We have known for many years that the brain communicates with the gut, however we have more recently discovered that this is not a single, one-way traffic road but rather a complex, bi-directional, super highway with multiple distinct channels travelling from the gut to the brain. It seems the teaming crew of microbes crowded within us play a critical role in this exchange between gut and brain; a discovery that offers tantalising opportunities to better understand our physiology and treat disease. You are invited to explore the human gut microbiome and its exciting implications in both irritable bowel syndrome and migraine headaches.

Clinical Applications of Digestive Enzymes:

Modern enzyme therapy utilizes microbial and plant sources of enzymes to improve digestion and provide relief for common GI symptoms including occasional gas, bloating, indigestion and irregularity. Properly blended and formulated, these enzymes exert activity and benefits far greater than even the body’s own digestive enzymes and can assist in preventing some of the underlying factors that can lead to small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, IBS, GERD, and functional disorders of digestion. Poor digestion also leads to an altered microbiome, biofilm formation, and sets the stage for inflammation and disruption of the brain-gut axis. Disruptions in the microbiome due to faulty digestion is being implicated in a wide range of health conditions. In this practical and dynamic presentation, Michael Murray will share valuable insights on the healing power of enzymes and other digestive aids.
